Cathays

Cardiff University - Cathays.jpg

Cathays covers quite a large area of the city, starting at the Cardiff University buildings to the rear of the Civic Centre and up towards Maindy, Roath and Heath. It is a densely populated area of mostly terraced houses, with an established Victorian era atmosphere.

The area is convenient for most of Cardiff University's teaching sites as well as the University Hospital of Wales. As a result it is Cardiff’s number one student area, with many houses for rent to students in Cathays, as well as a regular turnover of property for sale which is purchased by student’s parents as an investment. There are many estate and letting agents in Cardiff covering Cathays, but beware that many of these regularly receive bad feedback and so we advise you to chose your estate agent here carefully!

Shops and transport

Crwys Road is the main road running through Cathays and has a number of good restaurants and cafes, as well as a good-sized Co-op supermarket.  There is also a Lidl just off Cathays Terrace. Woodville Road is another popular street with smaller supermarkets, some good sandwich shops and discount stores for bargains.

Cathays railway station is right next to the Cardiff University Students' Union building, and the train tracks run under the building itself. Next door is the Sherman Theatre, which is a venue for comedy nights and bands as well as more traditional plays.

Because of the ever-present student demand, the easy walk to the city centre, and direct access to the major roads in and out of Cardiff, demand for housing is extremely high. Despite the dense housing in Cathays, large parks still exist around the civic centre, including Gorsedd Gardens (with its famous stone circle), Queen Alexandra Gardens (as seen in Dr Who), Bute Park which extends to Coppers Field and is the outdoor venue for events like Cardiff Mardi Gras, and located alongside the site of an old canal is Blackweir which also has a riding school and cricket clubhouse.
